On Monday, MGM Resorts International alerted employees of its sports and entertainment divisions that layoffs are coming. The majority of employees in these two sectors will be laid off starting on August 31. These employees had been furloughed and were receiving benefits through next month. On September 1, the benefits will no longer be provided by the company.

According to MGM, the company plans to reopen the venues offering sports and entertainment services as soon as it is safe to do so. Those who have been laid off will hopefully receive a call back in the near future. Within the company, around 63,000 employees were told back in May that they would be furloughed by the end of August.
Brian Ahern, the Director of Media Relations for MGM Resorts International, commented that it is unlikely that concerts and other entertainment will return to Las Vegas in the next month. This has impacted the employees who work within these shows and venues. MGM continues to work with public officials and look forward to when they can bring back employees to support the entertainment options the company is known to provide.

It is unclear just how many employees are affected by this week’s notice. Reports indicate that employees in such positions as venue managers, ushers, and hotel entertainment directors are included in those laid off.
The announcement on Monday provided information for employees that includes seeking support. The company has an Emergency Grant Fund that includes $14 million. This money can be used for assistance in such expenses as rent and mortgage, utilities, and groceries. Employees who are laid off can request grant money through November 29.
