The potential to create a casino resort in Richmond, Virginia continues to bring in new bids by top-rated companies. This week, it was announced that the Golden Nugget and Wind Creek Hospitality have presented a plan to build a casino in the capital city if voters in the city approve a ballot initiative in November.
Last year, voters in four other cities in the state had the opportunity to vote on casino gambling. Citizens in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Danville, and Bristol overwhelmingly gave their approval. Richmond is the last city in the mix that can offer a casino and officials decided to wait until this year for the vote. Despite the delay in voting, proposals are still being considered for a casino developer at this time.
Golden Nugget’s Plans
Tilman Fertitta’s Golden Nugget announced on Wednesday that it has submitted an application for a Richmond project. The price tag for the casino resort will be $400 million. Details of where the facility would be located remain a mystery. The company reportedly did not provide details on an exact location in its application and is considering a few options.
Golden Nugget Richmond Hotel & Casino top executive Lorenzo Creighton commented on the proposal, stating that the company is highly confident in its plans. The company has a preferred location and is currently negotiating with a few groups and do not want to disclose location specifics right now.
The casino would include a hotel with 177 guest rooms and over 30 suites. The casino would have more than 93,000 square feet of gaming space. Around 1,900 slot machines would be located on the casino floor along with 92 table games. An entertainment space and events center are also included in the plans.
Wind Creek Hospitality Plans
The Poarch Band of Creek Indians has also thrown their hat in the ring via its Wind Creek Hospitality arm. The proposal includes a $541 million casino project in South Richmond. The property would be located on Ingram Avenue.
Wind Creek has plans to build the casino in two phases. The property would have two hotel towers and the casino would be 100,000 square feet in size. Players would have access to 2,500 slot machines and 120 table games.
Additional Casino Plans
Before the Golden Nugget and Wind Creek submitted their plans, there were already four submitted applications on the table. Urban One and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment have teamed up to spend $517 million on a new venue.
Bally’s Corporation has submitted a plan that would see $650 million spent on a development near downtown on 61-acres of land. The Pamunkey Indian Tribe also wants to create a casino, submitting a plan for a $350 million casino resort on 24-acres on the James River.
The Cordish Companies are the last company interested in creating a casino in the capital thus far. The company wants to create a huge 250,000 square foot casino and a 300-room hotel. The plan would cost $600 million and would be titled Live! Casino and Hotel Richmond.
