For the first time in the history of the WSOP Global Casino Championship, the event was played online. The coronavirus caused the event to be postponed and continued social distancing meant the event would need to be held online. The WSOP hosted the event in New Jersey and Nevada on September 13. As an invite-only event, the tournament brings in the best of the best to compete. The entry fee is $10,000 and with 130 players competing, the tournament brought in just over $1 million in prize money.
Players could qualify for the event by winning a Main Event of the WSOPC or being named the Casino Champ. Players who finished in the top 100 of the 2019 WSOP Player of the Year could also buy-in. For this year’s online version, it took 11 hours to name a winner. In the end, it was three-time WSOPC ring winner AJ Kelsall who finished in first place.
Fighting for the First-Place Finish
When the final table began, Kelsall would be in the middle based on the chip stack. He would gain a nice foothold when he took out Shawn Daniels in 5th place. From there, he would take the lead after pushing Brad Albrinck out in third place and then faced off against Michael Trivett in heads-up play.
When heads-up began, Kelsall would hold a 2 to 1 chip lead. It would not be long before Trivett doubled up and took the lead. However, Kelsall would not wait long before taking back the lead and winning the final hand to claim the first-place finish.
